Happy End Stories

Mika (May)

Hello, my name is Mika and I am 10 years young. My breed? I could be a Westhighland-Terrier-Mix, but you never know. Let me tell you my story:

My first 8 years I spent with a spanish familiy.

The woman was nice, the guy unfortunately not. So it happened that one day I lived alone with the guy. Sometimes I was at home alone for several days and you can imagine that in the course of time there was no water and food left anymore. So often I fell asleep hungry and thursty. When my owner was at home, it was not better at all as he was frustrated and I got hurt by him. Hits and  kicks were usual every day. Twice he caught me that way that I had to go to the vet. After the first emergency operation I had to go home again with the guy. Unfortunately the torture went on and I was hit that way that I ended up again as emergency in the veterinary practice again. She was not sure whether I will survive. My owner did not want to pay the invoice and talked about euthanization. But the vet did not agree, she wanted to give me a chance. With a really difficult operation she was able to save my life.

But then there happened another thing. After the vet had seen my injuries (as well internal injuries), she threatened with a police report if he was not willing to hand me over to her.

And he did it.

The capability and the courage of a vet saved my life.

The physical injuries healed quite soon, but 2 years later, I still have to fight with the mental ones.

The vet brought me to Reginas animal shelter. Regina was very nice to me and had a lot of patience with me. But I had lost the trust into human beings.

Are there really nice humans? A life without hits and kicks? Someone who gives me food, water and treats twice a day? A petting hand?

Regina worked more than 1,5 years with me. I learned to walk out of the carrol into the dog run, to accept other dogs, to take treats out of the hand, to let humans touch me.

But it is not easy, my past sometimes obtains me and then I snarl despite I don´t want to.

There was a chance to be adopted by a family, but it did not happen as unfortunately I am not an easy-going dog.

But……meanwhile I am in Germany in a nice family. I had to grow 10 years old to discover that. The humans in this family are really good to me. If I see a broom, I bunk off. If they have something in their hands like a cup or a bottle, I am freezing, drop back to former behaviour patterns and start to snarl.

But this is not severe, my new family shows me that I don´t have to be afraid any more. I still have to learn that I am safe and hits and kicks belong to the past. In the family there are more dogs and cats. As long as they are not offending me, it works quite well.

Well, what else should I say?

Without the vet I would possibly not be alive any more.

Without Regina I would not have learned to trust humans and…………

without Regina I would not have been adopted by a new family.

I am living now for 10 years. I really hope that I will have some more years of luck in my new family.

And I promise you that I will enjoy this luck very intensively.

Thank you to the courageous vet,

Thank you to Regina,

I will never forget you too!

Yours, Mika
