Sanctuary

We are taking care of a number of dogs and cats who are not suitable to be re-homed (for the moment) because they have special needs. Of course, these animals are open for sponsorships, as they do need your help and support.

Read the section about Sponsorship or contact us for more information if you would like to help out a dog (30€ per month) or cat (20€ per month) in this way. We will send you regular updates and pictures of your sponsored animal, so you can know what he or she is up to.

The Messy Dogs

These 5 dogs came to us after being rescued from a home where a person had kept over 45 dogs in a 2-bedroom appartment. They have never been cuddled or given love, so they are quite ancious and you can't pet them. They have improved a little bit in a short while, and now accept treats from the hand, but you are not allowed to touch them. We have accepted 5 of them in our shelter, and have kept them together.

We have named them Whisky (white one), Ron (top left) and the other three are J&B, Gin and Vodka. They are currently not up for adoption as we have to see how they will evolve over the next couple of months.

Update: 22.12.2017

the situation is unchanged, treats from the hand but just can not touch.

Last week we had to catch whiskey and Ron because the fur was too matted.

Strangely enough, when you have them, and cut the fur, you freeze in fear, but do not bite.

They enjoy it all. And afterwards they look like dogs again and you realize how comfortable they are.

Joanita

Female, neutered, born 03.10.2012

Podenco-Presamix

Juanita is a verly loving and affectionate, but a little bit shy and timid. When you have earned her trust, she will be very cuddly and affectionate. She is very social with other dogs in the shelter and she likes running and playing with her mother.

Monster

We have named this one "monster-cat" because he is quite unpredictable.

He has been in the shelter for over 2 years now and we have kept him in a secluded area because he can be very vicious with the other cats and even with the humans who come to feed him. He has been doing better and better over time, in the beginning only hiding in his basket, now sometimes being cute and curious and coming up to the fence and strike his body against it.

On a good day, you can touch him through the fence, boop his nose, and even gently pet his head when you go in to feed him. But on a bad day - and there is no way of predicting what will set him off - he can be extremely angry and vicious, hiss at you and even try and hit or scratch you through the fence. On good days, we let him take a walk outside his enclosure, but we can never tell how he will react. Because of him being so untrustworthy, he is not available for adoption, and we can only hope that with more patience and care he will continue to improve.

Indi

Female, neutered, born 03.03.2010

Podencomix

Mom of Joanita

Indi has also been saved from Death Row, and remains quite shy and anxious and lets you touch her only under certain conditions. She is not malicious and when you've gained her trust, you can pet her. She has a close and loving bond with her daughter Joanita.

Malu

Female, born 01.05.2010

Streetmix

She was brought here together with her brothers and sisters after being hidden in a hole in the mountains, by their mom Naja when she couldn't find her home and noticed that the puppies were ill. They suffered from Parvovirus, and very unfortunately only 2 of the 5 puppies have survived. Malu has remained quite skiddish until today and doesn't let anyone touch her. Yet, she is not malicious, she just is too frightened and scared of humans. She likes dogs, though, and plays with some of her doggie-friends :-)

Adam

Male, neutered, born 01.12.2011

Podencomix

Brother of Ant

Somewhat shy and anxious but very nice guy. A friend was feeding him and his brother, and gained their trust so they could be saved from the street. He does like to come up and cuddle, but takes his distance right back after, when he has had enough :-).

He likes to play with his dog-buddies but less with people.

Ant

Male, neutered, born.01.12.2010

Podencomix

Brother to Adam

Contrary to his brother, Ant is a more withdrawn but also more playful. He likes to play and run with the pack and also with the  He is definitely smaller than normal podenco dogs, but ever so fast :-). He is supporting Adam and gives him some confidence and courage.

Canelo

Male geb.07.07.2014,

Brother of Nena

Canelo and his sister Nena are 2 small dogs, unfortunately still very shy. They are lovely, social dogs, they like to play and run around in packs.
They arrived here with their mom, who was thrown down the wall of the neighbor's house. She then got 3 babies there in an abandoned building and then arrived here at the age of about 6 weeks. Mama and the brother are a little less shy and are already taught.

Yaro

Male, neutered, born 10.03.2010

Podencomix,

Brother of Nayra

A lovely, independent Podencomix. He is the confidant of his sister, who was brought together with him from the Killing House. He is a real Houdini and succeeds in climbing over any fence that isn't thoroughly secured or high enough. He likes to cuddle with his sister and also likes to run around in the garden. He has herited a lot from the Podenco race and likes to hunt, but leaves cats alone, as when he is gentle enough, they share their food with him. Once you get to know him, he jumps up against you, wraps his paws around you and shares his special cuddle with you..:)

Nayra

Female, neutered, born 10.03.2010

Podencomix,

Sister of Yaro

She is very shy and a little bit anxious, and was brought to the shelter together with her brother from the Killing House. They both were quite shy at the time and were lucky to have been saved. In spite of all the love and special care she has received here, she has remained quite shy and cautious. Once she gets to know you, she opens up, but it takes time. Unfortunately Podenco dogs have fewer chances of being re-homed because they do have this hunter instinct.
